What is the WFA Level 1 Clubbell Certification?
Suitable for beginners, the WFA Level 1 Clubbell Certification is the most established clubbell training system in China. Developed since 2018 by WFA founder, Victor Rowse, the WFA training system is currently used by China Fire & Rescue, leading gym chains including Supermonkey and Leke, and world class athletes such as world kickboxing champion Wang Kehan and UFC flyweight athlete Wang Cong. Covering clubbell safety, clubbell training principles, clubbell program design, and the seven core clubbell movements, whether you are a professional coach looking to add clubbell training to your resume, or a fitness enthusiast looking to build a solid foundation in strength training, the WFA Level 1 Clubbell Certification is an ideal place for you to start your journey.
Why train clubbells?
The clubbell is the only piece of training equipment which compliments the full range of movement of the human body. One of the biggest problems with modern gym training is the excessive focus on linear barbell movements such as the back squat, the shoulder press, and the benchpress – good for putting on muscle mass but not so good if your goal is to keep your joints healthy and move in ways for which the body was designed. The reason we have a ball and socket joint in our shoulders and a large, opposable thumb in our hands is because the body was designed for grabbing objects to be used for throwing and striking – rotational movement patterns which we can train most effectively with the clubbell.
The clubbell was not invented to give people something to lift in a gym. It was originally a weapon. The fact that the clubbell is designed for striking and not for weightlifting makes its usage advantageous to us in several respects:
The clubbell can be used for a much wider range of movement patterns which bear closer resemblance to real life than any other type of equipment
Unlike barbell lifting, clubbell swinging pulls the joints apart rather than compressing them, increasing connective tissue strength and improving soft tissue elasticity
Training with clubbells necessitates the development of grip strength, an often neglected and yet incredibly important component of overall strength
Clubbell training lends itself to flow type training, which is more fun, more aesthetically pleasing, as well as more mentally stimulating than conventional weightlifting
Course Itinerary
The newly revised 2025 Certification is a “hands on” two-day offline course followed by four weeks of online coaching and an online test.
Two-day offline training
Four-week online coaching
After the two-day offline course is over, your four weeks of online coaching begins. This is the critical period when you need to keep practicing the movements covered in the two-day course. By sending us short videos every week of your movement practice, we will be able to mentor you in your progress and point out areas which need further work or correction.
Level 1 Test
Athletes who wish to become WFA certified clubbell coaches will need to pass the Level 1 Practical Test which is divided into two parts as follows:
A. Technique
Participants will be required to demonstrate the following three clubbell movements with perfect technique. Only five repetitions of each movement are required for the technique assessment.
Men 16kg clubbell. Ladies 12kg clubbell. No strict time limit.
Swipe
Ballistic Squat
Mill
B. Conditioning
In addition to having excellent clubbell technique, we expect WFA Clubbell coaches to be of a certain level of mental and physical condition. The conditioning test is designed to ensure that. Technique is still important for the conditioning test – sloppy technique will not only slow you down but could potentially lead to no reps. But the emphasis here is on being able to complete the required repetitions within the time cap.
Men 16kg clubbell. Ladies 12kg clubbell. 7 min 30 seconds time cap.
Alternating swing 50 repetitions.
Gamma cast 50 repetitions.
Clockwork squat 50 repetitions.
This is not an easy test. But we believe any coach who is committed enough will, in time, be able to pass.
